Description

A song sung by the young children of the Maccabi Association, according to Isaac Molho. The song appears in the Molho Archive in two recordings made by her father, and it is also found in the database of the Maale Adumim Institute, where it is presented as a recording of the Sephardic tradition of Turkey, with lyrics entirely different from those sung by Molho.

The Maccabi Gymnastic Club of Thessaloniki was founded in 1908 with the aim of promoting sports, music, and the teaching of Jewish history. The Great Fire of 1917 caused its temporary decline, leading to its merger with other Jewish associations. However, in 1926 Maccabi was re-established, and in 1930 it joined the international Maccabi organization of clubs, participating in the Maccabiah Games. In 1931, accusations regarding the involvement of a club member in Bulgarian nationalist events led to the Campbell Pogrom, during which the club’s offices were destroyed. During World War II, Maccabi ceased its activities, as its members were deported to concentration camps. In 1945 an unsuccessful attempt was made to revive the club, but it was ultimately re-founded in 1966, continuing its activities to this day, albeit with fewer sections and athletes outside the Jewish community.

Lyrics

Mira los Makabeos komo avansan, /ˈmiɾa los makaˈbe.os ˈkomo aβanˈsan/ Look how the Maccabees advance,

i al djudaizmo komo realsan. /i al dʒudaˈizmo ˈkomo realˈsan/ and how they uphold Judaism.

A sus ideal partechipemos a eyos mos adjuntemos. /a sus ideal paɾtetʃiˈpemos a ˈeʝos mos aðʒunˈtemos/ Let us take part in their ideals, let us join them.

Alef, bet, gimel, dalet. [1] /aˈlef bet ɡiˈmel daˈlet/ A, B, C, D

Mira komo todos eyos son fyeros, /ˈmiɾa ˈkomo ˈtoðos ˈeʝos son ˈfjeɾos/ Look how all of them are fiery,

mira komo sus pasos son lijeros. /ˈmiɾa ˈkomo sus ˈpasos son liˈʒeɾos/ look how light their steps are.

O kuanto djuztos son los deseos, de vos o Makabeos. /o ˈkwanto ˈdʒuztos son los deˈseos de vos o makaˈbe.os/ How just are the desires, O Maccabees!

Alef, bet, gimel, dalet. /aˈlef bet ɡiˈmel daˈlet/ A, B, C, D

Todos en esta venturoza ora, /ˈtoðos en ˈesta βentuˈɾoza ˈoɾa/ All in this blessed hour,

lodjemos por muestra kerida ovra. /loˈdʒemos poɾ ˈmwe.stɾa keˈɾida ˈoβɾa/ l_et us praise our beloved work._

Adelantemos kon enerdjia, komo la pasadia. [2] /aðelanˈtemos kon eneɾˈdʒia ˈkomo la pasaˈ ðia/ Let us move forward with energy, like in times past.

Alef, bet, gimmel, dalet. /aˈlef bet ɡiˈmel daˈlet/ A, B, C, D
